Homelessness is defined as living in a place not meant for human habitation, including emergency shelters, transitional housing, or in any institution where one is only temporarily resided and has nowhere else to go (ex. a motel, on someone’s couch, or in a healthcare facility).

Who experiences homelessness in Multnomah County?

  • 4,317 students experienced homelessness during the 2016-2017 school year

  • 4,177 people slept in shelters or outside on one night in January 2017 during the One Night Street & Shelter Count

  • 12,000 people are estimated to be “couch surfing” every night
